Southwestern Oregon Community College has expanded its services since it was founded in the 1960s. The Coos Bay-based college offers classes from Reedsport to Brookings and inland to Myrtle Point.

The college provides a head-start on a four year degree, helping students to transfer to university programs throughout the state, from a main campus at 1988 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay; and two satellite campuses in Curry County: 420 Alder St. in Brookings; and 29392 Ellensburg Ave. in Gold Beach.

The home of the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute, and a number of renowned programs and specialties, such as the nursing program and a number of varied disciplines in the liberal arts, technology and more.

The site of the only University Center in the state, Southwestern has agreements with most state universities and assists local residents in completing master's or doctoral degrees in many fields. A big part of the Bay Area, the college is a gathering place for community classes, meetings and workshops. *The college president is Dr. Judith Hansen.
